Last April, Germany’s Supreme Court demanded a retrial of cannibal, Armin Meiwes, convicted of manslaughter for eating his entire friend, Bernd-Juergen Brandes (sounds like a German dish to me!) - a sentence which the Supreme Court considers “too lenient”. The lesser charge was applied by the first court because the victim, Brandes, had demanded to be eaten by Meiwes.
(Act 2, Scene I)
At Meiwes’s retrial, Meiwes repeated much of his earlier defence, namely that both he and his willing victim tried unsuccessfully to eat the victim’s penis at which point the victim fell unconscious due to lack of blood.
Appealing for help but not knowing which way to turn, Meiwes says, “I didnt know whether to pray to the devil or to God.”
Hmm, yes, a dilemma I suspect is common among many cannibals.
His defence also included that old chestnut: “I didnt want to kill him, I just wanted to eat him”. If only I had a Euro or a Dollar or even a Macau Pataca for every time I heard that chat-up line!
The retrial continues…
